Instructions for Lasagna with Ground Beef
Prepare the meat sauce:
Heat a generous splash of olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it softens and turns golden, about 5 minutes.Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and herbs (oregano, basil). Season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, until it thickens slightly.
Prepare the bechamel sauce
:
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk for a minute to make a smooth roux. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring until it thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the grated cheese if you're using it. Set aside.
Assemble the lasagna:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce at the bottom. Top with a layer of lasagna sheets.
Spread a layer of bechamel sauce over the pasta, followed by another layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with a layer of bechamel sauce on top.
Sprinkle the mozzarella and parmesan evenly over the top.
