Homemade Churros: A Sweet Treat for Any Occasion

Churros are the ultimate indulgence—crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and perfect for dipping in chocolate or sweet spreads. This recipe is inspired by a lovely family tradition, and I couldn't resist making these after my relative shared the recipe with me. My husband loves churros, so I had to surprise him with a batch!

Let’s dive into how to make these delicious treats from scratch!

Ingredients:

  • 250 ml water
  • 60 g butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • 150 g all-purpose flour
  • 4 eggs
  • Sugar (for coating)
  • Cinnamon (optional, for coating)
  • Chocolate spread (e.g., Nutella or Eurocrem) for dipping

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough:

  • In a pot, combine the water, butter, and salt. Bring it to a boil.
  • Once it starts boiling, add the flour and stir continuously for about 5 minutes. You’ll know the dough is ready when it pulls away from the sides of the pot and forms a smooth ball.

Mix the Dough:
  • Transfer the dough to a mixing bowl and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  • Once slightly cooled, use a hand mixer to gradually add the eggs, one at a time. Continue mixing until the dough becomes smooth and thick, which should take around 10 minutes.

Fry the Churros:
  • Heat some oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  • Fill a piping bag with the churro dough and carefully pipe strips into the hot oil. You can decide the length of your churros—keep in mind they will puff up slightly as they fry.
  • Fry the churros for about 3 to 4 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy.

Coat and Serve:
  • Once fried, remove the churros from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  • Roll the churros in a mix of sugar and cinnamon (if using) for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Serve with your favorite chocolate spread (I used Eurocrem, but Nutella or any other chocolate spread works great!)

These homemade churros are perfect for a snack, dessert, or even a special treat for family gatherings. Whether you dip them in chocolate or enjoy them plain, they’re always a crowd-pleaser.
