This Bavarian wreath is a fun and delicious treat, perfect for a snack or for festive occasions like New Year. It’s a bit tricky to make, but the results are worth it!
Ingredients for the Dough:
- 500 g flour
- 150 ml lukewarm milk
- 150 ml lukewarm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Half a cube of fresh yeast (or around 15 g)
Instructions:
Prepare the Dough:
In a bowl, combine the flour, lukewarm milk, lukewarm water, sugar, salt, and fresh yeast.Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
Once the dough is ready, divide it into three equal parts.
Shape the Wreath:
- Roll the three dough pieces into long strands and braid them together.
- Form the braided dough into a wreath shape, pinching the ends together.
- Place the wreath on an inverted baking sheet that’s been dusted with flour.
- Place a piece of parchment paper in the center to prevent the dough from sticking together as it rises.
- Leave the dough to rise at room temperature until it doubles in size.
Boil the Wreath:
- In a pot, bring 1 liter of water to a boil, then slowly add 50 g of baking soda to the boiling water.
- Gently transfer the risen dough into the boiling water and cook for about 30 seconds. This step gives the wreath its signature texture.
- After boiling, use two spatulas or a slotted spoon to transfer the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake the Wreath:
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Bake the wreath for about 20 minutes, or until it turns golden brown.
Serve: Let the wreath cool down, then slice it in half and fill it with your desired filling (sweet or savory).
This wreath can be filled with anything you like, from creamy cheeses and meats to jams or even chocolate for a sweeter option. It’s a versatile treat that can be served as an appetizer or a dessert. Enjoy!
